The Urmston Musical Theatre perform two adult shows per year. A main show in October and a pantomime in February, both at the Poolside Theatre, Urmston Leisure Centre, Bowfell Road, Urmston. In June, there is an opportunity for our youth section to show their talents when they perform their own show at St Antony's High School, Bradfield Road, Urmston. A tremendous amount of hard work goes into the making of these shows. By request and audition, some of the youth members become involved in main shows, obviously when there is a need for children in the show, such as Oliver! and Annie. In any event, youth members who have attained the age of 16 by the first night of the performance of a main show are eligible to appear in the main show.
Auditions for the principal roles are held around May and rehearsals start late June/early July. I try and maintain the website to keep people abreast of forthcoming activities and auditions. The normal format for a main show is that chorus rehearsals are on a Monday with principal rehearsals on the Wednesday. Most rehearsals take place at Urmston Cricket Club on Moorside Road but occasionally some rehearsals will be done at other venues including Penny Bridge. As the show gets closer then all cast rehearse both nights and also Sunday afternoons.
In the event that singing, acting and dancing are not for you then there are numerous tasks which are just as important which are necessary to be done throughout the year from sewing costumes, to set building and lighting maintenance. We also need a full stage crew for each performance as well as props assistants and call personnel. There are Front of House positions vital to the putting on of any show.
That is the yearly life of the Society in a nutshell. We have a number of social events each year which are advertised here and by mailshot to members. We depend on audience numbers and fund raising to have the finances to put on new shows and attempt to make each performance as qualitative and excellent as any show on the professional stage in Manchester. We believe that we are one of the friendliest societies in the area. If you have any queries then feel free to email the society by clicking the link.membership @ umt.org.uk or telephone Anita Partrdige on 0161 748 5040, quoting the website. Please note that you need to remove the *****PLEASE REMOVE***** portion from the email address once you have clicked the link. This has been added to reduce spam.
