What the papers said.....

Noda North West

Urmston made the brave decision to move its annual pantomime to the February half term in a bid to attract the children — and boy, did this gamble pay off! The week night I attended was well over three quarters full.

The opening was bright, breezy and colourful with a good selection of musical numbers sung well by a full cast. The set was well lit with traditional scenery enhancing the story.

Buttons, played by Andrew Kielty, was a complete hit with the children. His enthusiasm shone through, as did the Fairy Godmother's. Cinderella, played by Amy Brown, was well rehearsed, charming and in a fine voice. John Walker gave his usual, well-rounded performance as Baron Hardup. But for me, and I can say the audience as well, my vote goes to the ugly sisters, played by Aidan Kielty and Gareth Jones. They were superb. They definitely sparkled in their larger-than-life exuberant portrayal of these two gaudy characters; the children absolutely loved them. Their rapport with the audience was excellent. Their performance, coupled with the visual effect of their many splendid colourful costumes, and pantomime make-up made a wonderful team. The Palace Ballroom scene, complete with star cloth, gave a dazzling effect. It was beautifully costumed by Mike Shaw from Altrincham Garrick — (I'm sure this man must wear sunglasses to sew!)

A special mention must also be made of the set of young dancers who executed the routines beautifully.

If I had to make one criticism of the show, it would be that the sound, at times, was rather unbalanced.

This was an all round, good, traditional, family pantomime - a very successful February "Christmas Cracker" indeed!
