    Yes, Nanette's a hit!

Urmston Operatic Society provide an amusing and colourful evening of entertainment with "No, No, Nanette" at the Curzon cinema this week. Husband and wife team Harry and Irene Lee are convincing as Nanette and her serious fiance, Tom. Irene's voice, in particular, is strong and sweet enough to reach the entire audience.

More confidence from both chorus and the principals would prevent the slurring of lines which are difficult to hear at the back of the stalls but the cast's enthusiasm is infectious. A lovely performance by Pam Snape as Pauline, the cook, won the loudest applause and deservedly so. Anita Partridge, Doreen Cockshot and Eileen Salt as the three girlfriends are unbelievable and funny, especially in the scene where they fight over Jimmy Smith (Neville Jackson). Mr Jackson's comic performance is worthy of any professional show. Valerie Bacon makes a strong partner for him.

Margaret Parker appears amusingly ruthless as the character who spends all her husband's money and Terry Chandler is a suitably hen-pecked Billy. The cast should remember that one of the golden rules of the stage is not to put your back to the audience; it happened a little too often in some scenes. An enjoyable night, though, filled with singing, dancing and acting, well worth going along to the Curzon to see any night this week.
