This piece by Willy Russell depicts a day trip to North Wales for under privileged educationally challenged young people. It is an ideal vehicle for a youth group stretching every member of the cast and introducing them to improvisation and mime.

The author gives the director an almost free hand and for this production the setting was kept in Liverpool, the actors coped with the accent but sometimes it blurred the speech. Muscially the numbers were handled well and every swear word came out crystal clear.

The staging was minimalistic with benches being reset by the cast for each scene which was enough for the audience to follow the journey.

The teachers in charge of these tearaways were played by Andrew Kielty (Briggs), Gemma Brownhill (Mrs Kay), Lynsey Jackson (Susan), they were in splendid form. These characters were well supported by the rest of the cast; among them was Natalie Kennedy who scored a personal success with her portrayal as Carol.

The energy from these young performers never flagged and altogether this was sterling work. After the performance with the help from the Mayor of Trafford, Cllr Whit Stennett, the NODA North West Theatre Award for best staging of a musical was presented to the Chairman. Congratulations.
